Ruhuna is known as Southern Province.There are So many Beautiful places,Historical places and valuable places.The region of Ruhuna was in ancient times the cent re of a flourishing civilization. The economic and cultural centers of ancient Sri Lanka, Tissamaharama,Mahanagakula and Magama were established here.
The human and Physical resourcesin the south show a broad diversity since the region covers a whole cross section of land forms, aggro-ecological zones, soil types and human settlements. Although the region falls into all three major climatic zones - wet, intermediate and dry - more than half of it is in the dry zone, which constitutes the most deprived area of the region, the 'South East Dry Zone'.
Galle
Galle is the capital city of the Southern Province. It has a World Heritage Site to its name and that is predominantly responsible for its popularity with tourists. This is the 300-year-old Dutch Fort, but there are other historical buildings to view as well.
The route is a coastal one and offers spectacular views along the way. The journey will not take more than three and half to four hours.Or if you like you can walk around the town as well, it gives a better feel of the place.
Mathara
Once upon a time Matara was called " Mahathota". The river running through Matara is 'Nilwala Ganga'. Out all the other "great ferries in Sri lanka,Mahathota attracted the attention of the poets.There was a wide area across this river. Hence it was called "Mhathota" which means "The great ferry ".
According to " Paravi Sndesaya " it is mentioned that Weerabamapanam made Matara as his capital and named "Mapatuna". Portuguese called this place as " Maturai ".Portuguese Priest Quarese's reason for the name "Matara" is also referring to Nilwala River. , and which means a great fortress. Portuguese called as" Maturai" in 1672. In 1744 Hide Matheren called as "Madarai". According to the old books it is clear that the Portuguese called it as "Maturai". The presently used name "Matara" has been in used for the last three centuries connecting its contact with the river "Nilwala".
HAMBANTHOTA
Hambantota District is situated in the southern province. It has an area of 2,593 km² .It is a very dry climate.There as well as the center of salt production. Other prominent towns include Ambalanthota,Beliaththa,Thangalle and Thissamaharamaya.
